Dora Katherine Unger (nee Down), 104, of Amherst, was called home to be with her Lord and Savior Thursday, October 10, 2013, from the Mill Manor Nursing Home in Vermilion. Dora was born January 3, 1909 in Sheffield Township. She was raised and lived in Sheffield Township for most of her life until 1983, when she moved to be with her daughter Sheryl in Amherst.
Dora's primary focus in life was being a housewife and mother and grandmother, great and great great grandmother. She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Lorain. Dora was also worked in a sewing factory as a young women and was gifted a hand needle work.
Survivors include her daughters and their husbands, Sheryl and Donald Hobart of Amherst and Kathleen "Kay" and Robert Schmidt of Lorain; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren.
Dora was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Albert Martin Unger who died October 27, 1978; twin brother, Donald Down; her sisters, Alice Standen, Grace Francis, Amelia Down, Hattie Schmidt, Leora Noster and Rosella Nahm; and her parents, John and Kathryn Down (nee Dittmer); and grandson, Dale Keith Miller.
Friends may call Sunday, October 13, 2013 from 2 to 5 P.M. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Monday, October 14, 2013 at 11 A.M. in the funeral home. The Rev. Jack Ison will officiate. Burial will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Fellowship Baptist Church Ladies Missionaries Society, 5046 Broadway, Lorain, OH 44052 or to the local animal shelter of your choice.
